1.
Stay at El Fenn

We loved staying at this beautiful hotel which is made up of three interconnected buildings. Around every twist and turn is a different picturesque spot. We liked having meals up on the roof, enjoying a different cake with mint tea each afternoon and meeting the 8 turtles that live on the grounds.

2.
Eat Delicious Meals

There are so many wonderful restaurants in Marrakech. The food is delicious and healthy—think lots of fruits, vegetables and hummus spreads. These are some of our favorites: Plus 61, Nomad, Le Jardin and La Famille.

3.
Search for your Dream Rug

What would a trip to Marrakech be without an excursion to find a beautiful rug? There are many purveyors of both new and vintage rugs.

4.
Wander the Souk

Our favorite thing to do in Marrakech is to wander through the Souk and look at all the beautiful items on display from traditional green pottery to natural dyes to blankets and rugs to woven hats.

5.
Visit the Design Studios of LRnce and Marrakshi

It was a dream to visit these two design houses - LRNCE, a pottery and artwork emporium and Marrakshi, a design and fabric weaving firm who made fabric for our woven handbags.

6.
The YSL Museum
& Majorelle Garden

We recommend getting to the YSL Museum and Majorelle gardens early to avoid the crowds. There is a beautiful display of YSL’s designs and “Love” artworks at the museum. The garden is an oasis in the city and houses a memorial to Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé.

7.
Visit Artisan Collective
Outside the City

We took a car outside the city one day to explore. First we started with breakfast at the lovely Berber Lodge. Then we headed to an artisan collective in a remote village. The Cooperative Art Tissage is a collective of artisans making linens, rugs and home furnishings. It’s possible to work with the collective to create items to your exact specifications.

8.
Dip In the Pool At
Beldi Country Club

We recommend getting to the YSL Museum and Majorelle gardens early to avoid the crowds. There is a beautiful display of YSL’s designs and “Love” artworks at the museum. The garden is an oasis in the city and houses a memorial to Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé.

9.
Get A Scrub At La Sultana

Getting a deep scrub at a hammam is a great way to beat the jet lag. We made a reservation to enjoy a body scrub and shampoo at La Sultana soon after our arrival. The treatment included a mud bath, tea and time in the relaxation area.

10.
Experience As Many Quintessentially Marrakshi Things As Possible Including…

  • Wear a straw hat that is available to borrow from nearly every hotel and restaurant
  • Admire the gorgeous tile work in the Medina and at Riads
  • Meet the cute kittens everywhere you look
  • Eat a pomegranate
  • Enjoy the beautiful Arabic typography
    around you
  • Savor cake and hot mint tea in the afternoon

Quick Tips

Reservations

Book reservations! Marrakech is busy and such a popular destination. We were surprised we needed reservations for each meal, even lunch!

Book a driver!

Book a driver to visit places outside the city center from Beldi Country Club to artisan collectives to Marrakshi Life. Our driver Ansi was wonderful! DM us @loefflerrandall for his info

10 dirhams = $1

Dirham is the currency in Morocco, about 10 dirhams per US dollar making conversion easy (I.e. 200 Dirhams = $20). I found most vendors will accept US dollars also. Sadly, next to no one accepts American Express so bring a different card.

Cover your knees and shoulders

It is a sign of respect to keep your shoulders and knees covered in Marrakech. We wore t shirts or long sleeve shirts and pants or longer skirts. It was fun to dress in a different way.
